چکیده

Combining logics has become a rapidly expanding enterprise that is inspired mainly by concerns about modularity and the wish to join together tailor made logical tools into more powerful but still manageable ones. A natural question is whether it o ers anything new over and above existing standard languages. By analysing a number of applications where combined logics arise, we argue that combined logics are a potentially valuable tool in applied logic, and that endorsements of standard languages often miss the point. Using the history of quanti ed modal logic as our main example, we also show that the use of combined structures and logics is a recurring theme in the analysis of existing logical systems.

Terminating Tableau Calculi for Hybrid Logics Extending K

This article builds on work by Bolander and Blackburn [7] on terminating tableau systems for the minimal hybrid logic K. We provide (for the basic uni-modal hybrid language) terminating tableau systems for a number of non-transitive hybrid logics extending K, such as the logic of irreflexive frames, antisymmetric frames, and so on; these systems don’t employ loop-checks. We also provide (for hy...

Relational Methods in Logic , Language and InformationPatrick Blackburn

This paper discusses the use of relational methods in the interdisciplinary eld of Logic, Language and Information. We rst sketch the developments that lead up to the current focus on dynamics in the area. After that we give examples of logics of transition that naturally arise in this setting, and we identify more general themes such as bisimulations, relativisations and dynamic modes of infer...

Decidability And Undecidability In Stand-Alone Feature Logics

This paper investigates the complexity of the satisfiability problem for feature logics strong enough to code entire grammars unaided. We show that feature logics capable of both enforcing re-entrancy and stating linguistic generalisations will have undecidable satisfiability problems even when most Boolean expressivity has been discarded. We exhibit a decidable fragment, but the restrictions i...

Hybrid Languages and Temporal Logic

Hybridization is a method invented by Arthur Prior for extending the expressive power of modal languages. Although developed in interesting ways by Robert Bull, and by the Sofia school (notably, George Gargov, Valentin Goranko, Solomon Passy and Tinko Tinchev) the method remains little known. In our view this has deprived temporal logic of a valuable tool. The aim of the paper is to explain why...
